WORKS IN PROGRESS
From time to time I'll try to illustrate a new work in progress to show how the process evolves. I am producing this painting for a fine art publisher. The client asked me to portray an urban scene and to incorporate a Toronto streetcar into the composition.

I wanted something that had a bit of a painterly feel to it, as I find that a looser approach allows for a more spontaneous overall feel to the work. I carefully researched my photo files to find reference for the concept. I will work away with several reference choices until I can compose an acceptable composition. I want to keep a sense of movement in the overall scene and have several points of interest to entertain the viewer's eye.

I'll be utilizing acrylics for ths project which are very resilient and vibrant. After lightly drawing the image on the board (a portion of the working drawing is seen below) with a brown coloured pencil, the painting is started by laying in transparent washes. I am using a sheet of illustration board prepared with gesso, which will give the paint a bit of "tooth" to adhere to in addition to helping give the pigment some texture. I will begin by layering in the paint in washes as the scene develops. The following is s series of "in progress' shots showing how the painting evolved. It is a lot of repetitious masking and transparent washes until the tones and values are built up to my satisfaction.

Above, I am laying in some of the texture on the road by utilizing a piece of old carpet.

Laying in some more detail with transparent wash, slowly building details using value and colour. When building up pigment with washes. it is important to use acrylic medium to give the pigment a bit more "workability" in addition to prolonging the drying time of the pigment..

Above, I have begun work on some of the figures..

Work on the streetcar itself has begun with detailing to follow. The details are what will bring the entire painting to life. I will post a few more in-progress shots, in addition to the final scan soon..
